10 October 2018- Today has been quite productive…
Angie found a bench by a tiny beach below our hostel to sit and journal. By squinting against the sun I managed this. Along came another pilgrim and he said “have you seen the castle?”
“What castle?”
“That castle.” Pointing in the general direction I had been looking.
The one obscured by the brightness of the sun and its reflections of the water in front of us. If I had known it was there I would have painted it too. Now on the top ten things to see in Fisterra.
They would be:
1. Lighthouse (3km from Fisterra but who’s counting)
2. Sunset at the lighthouse ( please note this is sunset i.e. The sun goes down and it will be dark, so please bring a torch to illumine the path beside the cliff you will have to walk the 3km back to town along). Just one wee aside: health and safety is down to common sense here in Spain. If we were at home these paths, let alone roads would be closed, someone might get hurt, someone might fall and hurt themselves. So being Spain the cars on this bendy road beside the cliff are protected from falling off the road by standard ‘M- type’ railings. The pedestrian walkway is the generous 125cm gravel track behind the railing on the cliff edge.
3. The beach, sorry 3 beaches, tiny one beside castle, the one before you come into town and the one the other side of the peninsula (tourists are not recommended to swim there, it’s open sea ocean, and Baltic.
6. Church. But it will be closed.
7. Fish market. Razor clams to octopus and everything in between. Well worth a visit!
8. Harbour, where the boats bring the fish in.
9. Etel&pan. Amazing Galician cafe. They even sell craft beer to go with the awesome food.
10. Streets. The streets are cobbled, bendy and hilly and back home would be pedestrianised. So watch yourself! The 10kph speed limit appears to discretionary. See note above on health and safety!
